We are so appreciative of VP Harris’ focus on #maternalhealth #disparities with the White House Maternal Health Call to Action Summit today, which includes our commitments at CommonSpirit Health to improve the way we care for #pregnantwomen across our country.

At the Summit, the Vice President will convene Cabinet Secretaries, Member of Congress, local elected officials, White House officials, advocates, and celebrities to discuss the maternal health crisis. The Summit’s programming will be livestreaming on whitehouse.gov/live and on the Vice President’s social media pages (Twitter and Facebook), beginning at (10:00 AM ET) Additionally, a number of our partners have recorded Direct to Camera testimonials on the importance of maternal health that will be streamed for you to view on Whitehouse.gov/live.

In conjunction with the summit, the Vice President will announce a new Department of Health and Human Services report showing the impact of pregnancy-related Medicaid coverage, and that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is proposing the establishment of “Birthing-Friendly” A MATERNAL HEALTH-RELATED hospital designation and guidance to states on how to cover Medicaid postpartum services for a year. These are initial commitments to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, and ensure safe pregnancy and childbirth for America’s mothers.

The research investigated ways in which the identification and clinical documentation of patients at increased risk for seizure emergency, such as status epilepticus, could be recognized and addressed proactively. The project included a focus group session with epilepsy providers to gather presumed risk factors, as well as a historical chart review of several epilepsy patients in search of these risk factors to assess potential impact. Lastly, a standardized risk assessment tool was drafted and vetted with Neurology providers at Barrow Neurological Institute with favorable response. Click here to read more on Taylor’s work.

I am pleased to announce that Corey Karlin-Zysman, MD will join CommonSpirit Health on November 1, 2021 as the System Senior Vice President of the Southwest Division for Physician Enterprise.

Reporting to me, Dr. Karlin-Zysman will provide clear strategic vision and direction for the Physician Enterprise in Nevada and Arizona. Her responsibilities include growing our diverse provider services and building aligned strategies that are inclusive of our employed medical groups, joint ventures, ACOs/CINs, and academic partners. As a practicing physician leader with a strong academic background, Dr. Karlin-Zysman is results-oriented and collaborative. She is looking forward to partnering and engaging with our providers, staff, and division leadership throughout Nevada and Arizona in the work ahead to advance high-quality, patient-centric care across the care continuum. Dr. Karlin-Zysman has more than 15 years of progressive leadership experience within large and complex integrated delivery systems. She has held leadership roles in departments of medicine and hospital administration where she was responsible in overseeing physician and APP strategy along with network integration and growth. Most recently she was Medical Director at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream at Northwell Health. She was also Assistant Professor of Medicine at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Dr. Karlin-Zysman received her medical degree from Stony Brook University in New York and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Brown University. She will be based in Nevada with her husband Warren and two children Elliott (11) and Reese (8) and will maintain an office in Phoenix.

Dr. Karlin-Zysman will partner with Larry Blumenthal, Physician Enterprise CFO, who has served as interim leader for Physician Enterprise in the Southwest for the past 18 months. Larry will work with Dr. Karlin-Zysman on a seamless transition and serve as an operations dyad going forward.
